Matcha for ADHD: What L-Theanine Does for Focus

Ask people with ADHD why they switched from coffee to matcha and you'll hear a pattern: smoother mornings, fewer crashes, easier starts. We had tired brains and ADHD brains in mind when we built MatchaBrand, so let's look at what's behind that.

Health note: This post is general information, not medical advice, and it isn't meant to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. Matcha contains caffeine. If you're managing anxiety, ADHD, a heart condition, or pregnancy, or you take any medication (including stimulants or antidepressants), talk to your doctor before changing your caffeine intake. If you're struggling with your mental health, a doctor or licensed therapist is the right first call.

L-theanine and caffeine are not medications. If your ADHD is significantly affecting your life, please talk to a professional. Also: if you're on stimulant medication, adding caffeine has effects that your prescribing doctor should weigh in on.

The ADHD Brain and Stimulants

One leading theory is that ADHD brains tend to run under-stimulated. It's one explanation for why stimulant medications can work for ADHD in ways that feel counterintuitive from the outside: for many people with ADHD, adding stimulation produces focus and calm, not hyperactivity.

Caffeine is a milder stimulant, and some people with ADHD say they leaned on it to get their brain online long before they had a diagnosis. If you've ever felt strangely calm or focused after coffee while everyone around you gets jittery, you're not alone. Plenty of people with ADHD describe the same thing, though the research on why is still catching up.

Matcha gives you caffeine, but with a modifier: L-theanine.

How L-Theanine Changes the Picture

L-theanine is associated with alpha brain wave activity, a mental state linked to relaxed alertness and reduced mind-wandering. For ADHD brains, which often struggle specifically with mind-wandering, rumination, and task-switching, the L-theanine/caffeine combination can create a noticeably more manageable mental state.

Several small studies, mostly in adults without ADHD, have found improvements in sustained attention and accuracy when L-theanine is paired with caffeine. Research in people with ADHD is limited so far. The idea is less anxious overarousal and more steady focus.

Why Matcha Works Better Than Coffee for Some ADHD People

Coffee gives you caffeine but no L-theanine. For some ADHD people, coffee hits the sweet spot of stimulation. For others, especially those who also experience anxiety (which is common with ADHD), the caffeine spike without L-theanine produces anxious hyperactivation that doesn't help with focus at all.

Matcha threads the needle: the stimulation of caffeine plus the calming effect of L-theanine. Some people with ADHD say the result feels like a gentler, steadier focus window. Research on L-theanine and focus is early but promising, and it's no substitute for whatever treatment works for you.

What People With ADHD Commonly Describe

Easier to start tasks. The activation energy for getting into work feels lower. Longer sustained focus periods. Less anxiety spiral on a deadline. Better mood in the morning, because the slow energy ramp means less of the coffee-anxiety cycle that can start a day badly.

If you want to run the experiment yourself, Hatsumi is the pick for a straight cup and Naka is the one for a latte. Both are shade-grown in Uji, which is what keeps the L-theanine high.

If you've been looking for a morning routine that works with your brain instead of against it, matcha is genuinely worth trying.

If focus is the main thing you're chasing, we break down the mechanism in more depth in Matcha for Focus and Energy.
